I chose a fiction book for this month! Apples Never Fall is a story about a 69 year old devoted wife and mother named Joy Delaney who goes missing. The story goes from past to present while Joy’s husband Stan and 4 kids try to figure out what happened. There is a strong tennis theme in this book as Joy and Stan were elite players, started a tennis academy, and have ongoing drama with a previous tennis player they coached. This family has some secrets that surface as we try to figure out where Joy is. Before Joy goes missing, we are introduced to a young girl named Savannah who happens to appear at the Delaney’s house one night (showing up bare foot and hurt) and stays as a guest for quite a while. She cooks delicious meals for Joy and Stan and they care for her as they would another daughter. But there is more to her story than she tells them. Back to the present, Stan becomes the prime suspect as his bizarre behavior interests the police investigating the disappearance of Joy. The Delaney’s 4 grown children have different views on what happened and we start to see their relationships with their parents. The book gets a little long because we dive into each kids past and also current struggles with significant others and mental health issues. Overall I enjoyed the twists and turns and had a hard time putting this book down as I got closer to the end. I would recommend this book if you need a family drama right in time for the Holidays!
