Welz Tile Book Cave: August: Verity by Colleen Hoover

Verity is a suspenseful and psychological thriller by Colleen Hoover. This book was all over BookTok and I read it in 1 day! Yes, 24 hours of being wrapped up in the intense and complex storyline. I can't remember the last time a fiction book had me so captivated. I could not stop reading.

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the edge of financial troubles when she gets the book deal of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford sets up a meeting to offer Lowen the opportunity to finish his wife's popular and best selling book series. Verity Crawford has been in a car accident and unable to write and finish her book. Jeremy offers Lowen to come and stay at their beautiful mansion and have access to Verity's office where she can dive into storylines and characters of the book series. Lowen has lost her apartment in New York because she can't afford the rent anymore. She happily agrees to stay in their home as she writes and finishes Verity's book.

Lowen's agent Corey is concerned about this arrangement, her safety, and mental health (Lowen's mom passed away one week ago). Lowen feels she doesn't have a choice due to her financial state and the fact it will take time working in her office to figure out how Verity wanted her book to be written. The Crawford's are dealing with tremendous loss. Their first daughter died from an allergic reaction at a sleepover. Their second daughter drowned in the lake near their home. Both were ruled accidents. Several weeks later Verity was in a car accident when her car hit a tree. She has been severally injured. Verity is keep at the house bedridden with a nurse who comes daily to care for her. Verity is unable to speak, walk, or do things on her own- practically brain dead.

As Lowen arrives, Jeremy gives her the Master Bedroom and is very kind and sweet. He cooks for her and is a loving husband to Verity and a caring father to their son Crew (5). Lowen gets right to work in Verity's office. Verity writes from a villain's point of view, something Lowen has not done before and realizes it will take some time getting used to. Among all the papers, she finds a manuscript that is Verity's autobiography. She knows she should not read it, but she feels the need to get inside Verity's head to understand her as a writer. The manuscript tells the story of how Verity and Jeremy met, her feelings of her daughters, and events around their deaths.

Lowen continues working on Verity's book, but weird things start to happen. Lowen thinks she sees the curtains moving in Verity's room. The nurse said she turned on the tv and it was turned off when Lowen walked by. Crew randomly waves to his mom's room when he is outside. After writing for the day, Lowen goes back to reading the manuscript. She reads about intimate aspects of Verity and Jeremey's relationship. She starts to develop romantic feelings for Jeremy and learns Verity's thoughts on being a wife and mother.

Lowen suffers from sleepwalking and asks Jeremy to put a lock on the outside of the room she is staying in. She will have him lock her in her room and night and open it in the morning. Lowen gets deeper into the manuscript and is horrified to learn of Verity's feelings and what role she played in her daughter's deaths. She then sees Verity standing at the top of the stairs looking down at her. She tells Jeremy, who says that is impossible and doesn't believe her. Lowen is convinced Verity is faking her illness. She has read something in the manuscript that proves it.

I highly recommend this book! There are so many twists and turns. I still think about the ending. I wish I could experience this book reading it for the first time again. I will be reading more books by this author.
